1A Iowa boys’ state wrestling results: Alburnett’s Tayten Coufal proves his passion for the sport
Alburnett in 3rd with 37 1/2 points after Day 1 of state wrestling; Jesup has another banner day with 4 quarterfinalists; full results from Wednesday’s Class 1A state wrestling matches

DES MOINES — Wrestling courses through Tayten Coufal’s veins.
The sport is probably woven through every fiber of the Alburnett sophomore’s body. Not an ounce of sweat or a drop of blood is wasted when it pertains to wrestling.
“It means a lot,” said Coufal, whose dad, Austin, wrestled for Cedar Rapids Prairie. “My dad wrestled a lot. He set the takedown record at Prairie. I just love going out there and scoring points. It’s fun.”
Coufal demonstrated how that passion turns to prowess in competition. He pinned Saint Ansgar’s Christian Michels in the second-period of his opening match of the Class 1A state wrestling tournament Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Arena. He was one of six quarterfinalists for the Pirates, who ended the first session in third place with 37 1/2 points.
“Wrestling is his identity, in a good way,” Alburnett Coach Clayton Rush said. “We’re working on it because wrestling is not the end all, be all.
“You have to put in extra work to be successful. That’s his sport and he does it year-round.”
Coufal (44-4) credits his work in the offseason, training with his teammates and attending club workouts. He said his teammates push him to be his best, but when the whistle blows, he’s on his own. Coufal embraces that aspect.
“It’s just me out there,” Coufal said. “Nobody else on the mat, so I can’t blame anybody.”
Once Coufal got on the board after a long flurry that resulted in a takedown and 2-0 lead with 30 seconds left in the first, he was in control. He escaped in the second, notched his second takedown and decked Michels for his second straight state quarterfinal appearance.
“He was pretty stingy on that front headlock,” Coufal said. “It took me a whole period to score. I just knew when I got out (in the second period) that I would get to my offense and finish the match.”
Last year concluded with a third-place finish. He was not satisfied with bronze, so he worked to improve. He is the top seed at 126 and worked for this opportunity.
“I fell short last year,” said Coufal, who dropped from 132 in midseason. “I knew what I could do. My coaches believe in me and I believe in my coaches. I just kept working every day just to get back here.”
Alburnett tallied 11 1/2 bonus points throughout first day. State finalist Rowdy Neighbor (120) and Preston Klostermann (138) pinned their way to the quarterfinals, while Atlee Dewitt won by technical fall at 106. Emmitt Fleshman went 2-0, opening with a first-period fall.
The Pirates’ Reece Klostermann produced a notable upset — on paper only. Klostermann topped Missouri Valley’s fifth-seeded Riley Radke, 4-3, in the second round at 150.
“He’s a kid that’s tough in every aspect,” Rush said. “Toughest guy I’ve got on the team.”
East Buc’s Clay Wilgenbusch is another 12-seed in the quarterfinals
Klostermann wasn’t the only No. 12 seed to knock off a No. 5 foe. East Buchanan’s Clay Wilgenbusch (35-9) battered his way to a 12-5 win over West Branch’s Cooper Gates. Seedings and rankings aren’t factors to the 165-pounder.
“The only thing I was focused on was winning matches,” Wilgenbusch said. “Go out and be competitive against really good kids. Kids that people think he has it over (me) because they haven’t seen me a lot this year.
“None of that matters. We’re all here at the state tournament. We’re all good.”
Wilgenbusch’s physical style yielded four takedowns, building a 10-3 lead early in the third. Coaches lauded his use of heavy hands that wore down Gates.
“I’m always clubbing hard,” Wilgenbusch said. “Get them worked up and get in their head like, ‘Boy, this is dumb. I don’t know why I’m doing this. I’m basically getting beat up out there.’ Make them regret coming out and facing me.”
East Buchanan second-seeded heavyweight Cody Fox also advanced to the quarterfinals.
Jesup sends 4 to the state wrestling quarterfinals
Jesup has already made noise this postseason, placing fifth at the state duals on Feb. 3 in Coralville. The J-Hawks were fourth with 31 points after Day 1. Ayden Bergman (106), second-seeded Cooper Hinz (113), Wyatt Vanderwerff at 157 and 175-pounder Kile Bucknell reached the quarterfinals for Jesup.
“We keep telling these guys if you really want it that it’s yours,” Jesup Coach Matt Gross said. “We keep telling our guys every time we walk off that mat we want to make sure our head is up, win or lose. We need to know we will go six minutes.
“We were down in three or four matches. We just keep pushing and pushing to get that win.”
Vanderwerff was down 2-0 through two periods, reversing, tallying nearfall and pinning Wilton’s No. 7 Owen Milder. Vanderwerff has overcome a series of injuries in previous seasons. Gross said he had a knee issue earlier this season.
“That kid fights,” Gross said. “I’m so proud of him.”
Lisbon has a pair of state wrestling quarterfinalists
Lisbon advanced two into the quarterfinals. Wes Sadler (106) and Tiernan Boots (144) remained in the winner’s bracket. Boots beat Underwood’s Lucas Bose, 8-4. He returns to the quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons.
“There are a couple things I need to work on still, but we’ll get them ironed out,” said Boots, who placed fifth as a freshman in 2022. “It’s better than last year when I got caught in my first match. It’s a good start to the tournament.”
Boots said he has become stronger and moves better, improving from more robotic transitions to flowing between positions. Missing the podium pushed him, but he hasn’t dwelled on it.
“It definitely motivated me to just keep getting better,” Boots said. “Coaches in all sports say to have a short memory. Just keep moving forward and get the next best thing.”
Maquoketa Valley’s Nathan Beitz (190), No. 1 Brady Davis at 215 and heavyweight Aiden Salow made the quarterfinals.
West Branch and South Winneshiek each had two quarterfinalists. The Warriors’ returning state finalist Collin Holm (144) won by fall.
