Marjorie Eloise (Thomas) Lubben, age 94, passed away on January 24, 2024 at Monticello Nursing Home surrounded by all her loved ones. She was born on September 14, 1929. She was the daughter of Dr. Colin G. Thomas and Eloise K. Thomas.

Marjorie graduated from Monticello High School in 1947 and attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1951. She worked for a year at Sperry Company in Long Island, New York. Marjorie returned to Monticello and married Robert Howard Lubben on December 24, 1952. They raised two sons, David and Alan Lubben. Bob and Marj farmed north of Monticello until 1989, and they moved to a farm south of Monticello.

She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter FP for over 70 years, a member of Friday Club until its demise after 100 years and a founding `member of the Monticello School Foundation. She was active in the Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, served as an elder deacon and she was one of the original Pie Ladies for many years. Marj loved bowling and competed on the bowling league until she was 75 years old. She also sang in the “Joyful Noise” choir. She stayed active by swimming, gardening, walking on the treadmill and playing bridge.

Her grandchildren and their friends knew her by “Oma”. Her hobbies included sewing many quilts and outfits for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved knitting, stained glass, woodworking, painting, pottery, making stuffed animals, canning jelly and vegetables. She enjoyed entering her creative crafts in the Great Jones County Fair open show.

She was an avid reader, loved cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, Cyclones, and grandchildren in their sporting events. She spent many summers at her Thomas family cabin at Kerr Lake in North Carolina. Her favorite accomplishments were swimming across Kerr Lake at age 79 and creating two giant stained-glass windows in her living room. She enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren to France, Jamaica, and Bahamas. Majorie’s greatest loves were her family, animals and being on the farm.

She is preceded in death by her husband Robert H. Lubben, her son Alan T. Lubben, her parents Colin G. Thomas and Eloise B. Thomas. Along with her siblings Colin G. Thomas Jr., John B. Thomas, Willam R. Thomas, and Elizabeth (Betty) Busby.

Surviving are her son David (Lisa) Lubben, and his children Lydia (Neal) Grant, Lael (Joel) Robinson, Clayton Lubben, and Alan’s children Allison (Josh) Kelchen, Emma Lubben and Dane Heiar. Great-Grandchildren: Lincoln, Collins, and Gibson Grant. Owen, Madalyn, and Olivia Kelchen, Remi Robinson, and Saphyre Olds. Great-Great-Grandchild Wysteria.
