August “Gus” Richard “Dick” Smith, 83, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. “No need for a suit and tie when you stop to say goodbye, casual dress will be just fine, or just your bibs, I’ll be in mine.” Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairieburg, Iowa, with Father Sean Smith officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Prairieburg.
Dick was born on January 29, 1940, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of August and Norma (Whiting) Smith. He served honorably in The United States Navy from 1957 until 1961, upon returning he worked in the maintenance department for Cryovac Inc. until his retirement in 2001. On January 31, 1963, Dick was united in marriage to Margaret M. Loughren in Prairieburg. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He looked forward to his annual vacations with his family, fishing, going for rides on his Harley and was an avid Euchre player. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairieburg. Dick will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dick is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Todd (Kristina) Smith of Alburnett, Iowa, Lisa (Blaine) Steggall of Marion, Iowa, and Dawn (Randy) Danford of Marion; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; sisters, Onalee Holmes and Norma Holub.
