Garen L. Rains of Solon, IA passed away on December 14, 2023 at age 80 at Valley Baptist Memorial Hospital, Harlingen, TX. Garen was born on April 28, 1943 to parents Byron and Charlotte (Minehart) Rains.
Garen worked as a machinist at Terex (formerly Iowa Mfg.) for 41 years. He enjoyed sports, participating in Golden Age Olympics and Encore games in Texas. Garen won the Iowa State Horseshoe Championship, 2 championships in bean bags at the Golden Age Olympics and championship in bean bags and horseshoes at the Encore games. Garen was a quiet man whose actions spoke for him. Garen retired in 2005, choosing to spend his winters at Sunshine RV Resort in Harlingen, TX and his summers on his land in Solon. His beloved dog Dude was his constant companion.
Garen is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Ruth (Wigger) Rains. Children: Gary (Cheryl) Rains, Scot (Lisa) Rains, Mark (Joyce) Rains, Lisa (George) Almazan, Leslie Hubbard, Sheryl Daves and Timothy Wigger. Garen has 2 living siblings: Ronda (Donald) Moffatt and Cheryl (Henry) Overman. Garen has 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Garen was preceded in death by his parents Byron and Charlotte Rains, and sister Glenna (Allen) Schnell.
Graveside services and a celebration of life will be this summer.
