Longtime Iowa Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley is receiving treatments for an infection at a hospital, his office said Tuesday.
The 90-year-old Grassley is receiving antibiotic infusions for an unspecified infection, his office said in a news release. He is being treated at a hospital in the Washington, D.C., area, the release said.
Grassley “is in good spirits” and plans to return to work “as soon as possible following doctors’ orders,” according to the release.
Grassley is expected to make a full recovery, and an update will be provided “when available,” a spokesman for his office said.
In January 2023, Grassley underwent surgery for a hip fracture. He told reporters at the time he injured himself while doing “a stupid thing” in the kitchen of his Washington, D.C., town house. “It didn’t work and I fell and broke my hip,” he said.
Grassley has represented Iowa in the U.S. Senate since 1981, and in 2022 was reelected to his eighth, six-year term.
