Minecraft is an online world-building game, where players can explore, build structures and mine for materials - and it is one of the best-selling games of all time. The first version of Minecraft was built in six days, but it took another two years to get the final version. In one Swedish school, the game is a mandatory part of the school curriculum for students. A teacher told the local paper, that Minecraft helps kids 'learn about city planning, environmental issues, getting things done, and even how to plan for the future.”
Interestingly enough, the beloved Creeper character began as a coding error. The game's creator, Markus Persson, was trying to make a pig and input the wrong figures for height and length, and the creeper was born.
You can make your own creeper bookmark with just some green and black construction paper, scissors, glue and a ruler. This craft was inspired by one we found on YouTube. You can find those step-by-step instructions by looking for Red Ted Art on YouTube.
And there you have it! Your own blocky Minecraft bookmarks. They can remind you of screen time even while you are reading a book. (Photos taken in Cedar Rapids on June 2, 2020 by Lyz Lenz/The Gazette)
First, grab a green piece of paper. Take one corner of the paper and fold it over so it makes a triangle. You will have a rectangle of paper left over at the bottom. Cut that off.
Now you have a perfect square. Take one corner of your paper square and match it up with the opposite corner. Press down the crease so you have a triangle. Take the pointy ends of the triangle and fold them up so they meet in the middle. The paper will look like a diamond.
Unfold it so you have the triangle again. Now, take one corner of the top triangle and fold it down like a lip.
Then take the corners of the triangle and fold them into the lip so it makes a little cup. This is your bookmark. The cup will sit over a book page and mark your pages that way.
Use squares of black paper and glue to make your square into a creeper. Or use pink paper and try to make a pig.
