The internet is one way people try to preserve memories. Across the country, many libraries, historical societies and universities help collect the pictures and memories of the past.
The Coralville Public Library is creating a digital history archive for the city of Coralville. It includes pictures from Iowans who lived in Coralville as early as 1900. They also began a digital archive of memories from quarantine and members of the community (that's you) can submit to it. To learn more, visit coralvilledigitalhistory.omeka.net.
The University of Northern Iowa maintains the Fortepan Iowa project, which is a collection of photos taken by ordinary Iowans during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The website says 'the photos represent the personal, whimsical, poetic, significant, and accidentally artistic moments of everyday Iowa life.” They are fun to look through! Find them at fortepan.us.
The University of Iowa has an extensive collection of digital images and letters and documents. You can look at photos of letters from the Civil War, or a collection of historic sheet music. Have an adult help you browse through by visiting digital.lib.uiowa.edu.
