As I wrap up my first six months as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cedar Rapids and East Central Iowa, I've come to fully appreciate the incredible warmth and nurturing that mentorship brings to the lives of our young people and future leaders. In an era where the challenges facing our youth are as diverse as they are complex, the role of mentorship emerges as a cornerstone for fostering resilience, self-belief, and meaningful personal growth.
Youth mentoring goes way beyond just getting good grades or landing a job. It's about instilling the confidence to overcome obstacles, discover passions, and embrace one's unique identity. Effective mentoring programs not only help individuals, they create a supportive community where every young person feels seen, heard, and valued.
January is National Mentoring Month. In the midst of the incredible challenges facing our community’s youth, let us all take an opportunity to set a New Year’s resolution that goes beyond our own needs to truly make this year count.
At any given time in the year, we see an average of 130-180 youth waiting for a mentor. The need for diverse mentors is a major cause of this wait, as we focus on intentional matching. We strive to meet the needs and preferences of our children and their families. Over half of our youth are waiting for a male or person of color. The volunteer shortage we experience prevents us from providing the crucial life skills needed for youth development to children in need.
Would you consider giving one day out of your month to support a child in 2024? We work with our volunteers to train and provide ongoing support during the life of your match. We offer a variety of match opportunities to fit any lifestyle, including family matches and school-based mentorship programs. We host activities and provide resources for bonding opportunities. There is no greater gift than the gift of time. This year, share your wisdom, share your smile and be a friend. Everyone has what it takes to make a difference.
Together, let’s make 2024 the year of community: Where every young person has the opportunity to thrive, grow, and make their mark on the world — with a supportive adult by their side. Visit BigCR.org to learn more and take the next step. Mentors Matter, and this month we celebrate all mentors, current and future.
