DES MOINES - Iowa's corn and soybean crops are finally taking off, thanks to plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures across most of the state.
The weekly crop report released on Monday shows last week's weather allowed farmers to finish planting the corn, while make good progress on soybeans. A break from the strong winds gave farmers a chance to catch up on spraying for weeds.
Farmers in western Iowa continue to watch the rising Missouri River. Some are moving grain and equipment to higher ground. Storms persisted in southeast Iowa, where field work was limited.
The report shows nearly all of Iowa's corn has been planted, with 96 percent emerging. The crop is rated 81 percent in good to excellent condition. Soybean planting is 94 percent, about the same as last year.
