HAROLD BERN
Cedar Rapids
Harold Bern, 94, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018. He was born June 2, 1924, in Sioux City, to Henry and Hilda Eisner Bern. He graduated from East High School and Iowa State University. He served in World War II and the Korean conflict. He married Jean Rachut in 1949 in Burt, Iowa.
He worked for Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. first in Marshalltown, and then in 1955, in Cedar Rapids, retiring after 38 years. He then worked part-time at Bethany Lutheran Church. He was very active in his church, St. Luke's Hospice and many other organizations. He and Jean spent many winters in Arizona. He enjoyed golf, winemaking, woodworking and fishing.
He is survived by his daughters, Cyndi Scott, Cedar Rapids, and Chelain (Marc) Stocker, Flagstaff, Ariz.; granddaughters, Amanda (Matt) Millhollin, Peoria, Ill., Ashley (Jeremy) Markisohn, Winter Garden, Fla., and Alaina Stocker, Seattle, Wash.; his great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Easton Millhollin and Ellery and Gabriel Markisohn; and brother, Art (Joyce) Bern, Grass Valley, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Cherolyn; and his sister, Esther.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 8 at Bethany Lutheran Church.
