He briefly attended Muskogee Junior College before entering the United States Navy in 1943, where he was a member of the Seabees before his discharge in 1946. After graduation, Jack worked as a librarian in Stillwater and Norman, Okla., and Albuquerque, N.M. In 1961, Jack moved with his family to Iowa City, where he worked at the University of Iowa libraries, mostly as the head of the physics and zoology branches, until his retirement in 1986. Jack enjoyed his retirement years traveling and doing volunteer work at Trinity Episcopal Church, where he was a longtime member.
People often mentioned Jack's wit, sense of humor, kindness and cheerful attitude when describing him. He leaves behind many friends.
