Vinton
Ila Thorn, 94, of Vinton, Iowa, passed away Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, at Virginia
Gay Nursing Center, Vinton, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Ila was born Jan. 4, 1924,
in Center Point, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Esta (Sherman) Phelps. She graduated from Palo High School. For the people who knew and loved her, the twinkle in her eyes and the smile on her face when she saw you always will be held dear in our hearts. She always was so grateful for even the smallest things that most of us just take for granted. The world would be a better place if we could emulate those qualities. Our lives have been blessed by her love, spirit and quick wit.
Ila is survived by her daughter, Linda (Larry) Klimes of Nevada; grandson, Eddie Klimes; sister-in-law, Pat Phelps of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Fred and Esta Phelps; brothers, Donald, Otis, Morris, Dorn, George and Mart Phelps; and sister, Vivian Phelps.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Virginia Gay Hospital and Rehab. They have been a part of her family and home for the past 10 years, extending wonderful care. To Lori Smith, activities director, who brought so much joy to Ila with all the events and daily activities, even more for your care and concern for her. Special thank-you to Judy Phelps, Elaine Dingbaum and Shannon Umbdenstock for always being there for her. As well, it has been my honor and privilege to assist her in her health care. My life has been greatly enriched by having my aunt Ila. Love you always, Janet Umbdenstock.
