Robert James Kabela, 89, of Solon, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2023, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A celebration of life gathering will be from 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024, at Palmer House Stable, 200 East Main Street in Solon. A brief service will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by a dessert reception. The private family inurnment at Oakland Cemetery will follow the reception.
Bob was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Solon, the eldest son of Otto and Agnes (Buchmayer) Kabela. He attended Solon High School and served in the Army, stationed in Japan. He married Shirley (Ames) Kabela on June 1, 1957, built a home in rural Solon, and worked for 37 years at Procter & Gamble in Iowa City. Bob started running at age 50—participating in countless 5K races, and spent some time and money in Las Vegas over the years. With a passion for ice cream and cookies, he never turned down a free meal—but he was endlessly generous and supportive of everyone who loved him.
Bob is survived by his children Mike (Shelby) Kabela of Solon, and Cheryl (Mike) Hansen of Fort Collins, Colo.; grandchildren Brick, Jack, Beckitt, Brooks, Lainey and Briar; sister Darlene Brant of Atkins, Iowa, and brother Don Kabela of Solon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; and two brothers, Paul and Lawrence.
