Demetra “Tula” S. Margellos, 90, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, December 27, 2023. A visitation will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, with a Trisagion service beginning at 7 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Tula was born November 3, 1933, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of Spiros and Magdaline (Vasilakos) Karavas. She graduated from Lincoln High School and the Lincoln School of Commerce. Tula was united in marriage to Nicholas Peter Margellos on May 10, 1959, in Lincoln. She worked for the local unemployment office, WMT-TV, and Rockwell Collins, where she retired from in 1995. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, St. John Ladies Philoptochos Society, and Daughters of Penelope.
Tula was a caring, spunky, feisty, and loving wife, mother, and Yiayia. Once you met Tula (and her flashy glasses), you never forgot her. She loved baking, cooking Greek food, bowling, and playing cards (especially 80 Cents) with her friends. Tula enjoyed going to breakfast on Saturdays at Hy-Vee, watching football of any kind, and the Game Show Network. She found great joy in entertaining and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her daughter, Tina Margellos of Cedar Rapids; son, Peter (Lori) Margellos of Cedar Rapids; granddaughters, Anastasia Margellos of Cedar Rapids, and Madison Lockwood of Chicago, Illinois; sister, Elaine Poulos of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brother, Adam (Sandy) Karavas of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Anthe Kollias of Muncie, Indiana; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Koukla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Spiros and Magdaline Karavas; husband, Nick Margellos; son, John “Ziggy” Margellos; brother-in-law, John Poulos; sister-in-law, Billie Igo; and beloved dog, Sassy.
