Melvin LeRoy German, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. on Friday, December 29, 2023, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, with a Memorial Service to follow at 11:30 a.m.
Melvin was born January 17, 1934, son of Jerome and Lillian (Pimper) German. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Melvin was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Schanbeck on September 4, 1957. To this union were born three children, Dennis, Vicki, and Melanie. Melvin enjoyed solving problems, a skill he utilized while working at Highway Equipment for over 32 years. After retirement, Melvin enjoyed working as a contractor for Altor Scrap Metal and Junge controls, putting his welding skills to use. When not working, Melvin relished being outdoors doing yardwork, as well as listening to Polka music, playing softball, and dancing. Melvin was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Melanie German (Chris Perdue), son-in-law, Dennis Steffes; son, Dennis (Jillian) German; two grandsons, Alex Steffes and Eric (Brie) Steffes; two brothers, Steve (Janaan) German and Greg (Lori) German; two sisters, Marlene Kortenkamp and Sheryl Porter; and many nieces and nephews.
Melvin was proceeded in death by his parents, Jerome and Lillian German; a daughter, Vicki Steffes; brothers, Sonny German, Ivan German, and Lauren German; sister, Alice German; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Evlon and Ethel Schanbeck.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Prairie Hills of Cedar Rapids for the care and compassion they provided to Melvin.
