Arlene Mae Madill passed away, at the age of 89 years, on Dec. 16, 2023, at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St Marks United Methodist Church at 4700 Johnson Ave NW, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends at the Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Service. A burial will follow in the afternoon at the Fairview Cemetery, Gilman, Iowa.
Arlene was born on Sept. 11, 1934, in Grinnell Iowa, the first daughter of John Lawrence and Luella Elizabeth (Gause) Madill. She treasured her early farm life and continued to own and care about her family land. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1952. She attended the Omaha Business School in Omaha, NE, and accepted a job with the U.S. Navy Department in Washington D.C. She started her 38 year career at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids in 1954. She took early retirement, and eagerly started her second career as a community volunteer.
Arlene served at many places, including St Paul's UMC, Four Oaks, HACAP's Inn Circle, Cedar Rapids Library, Prairie Schools, and Miracles in Motion She served on the Board at Preston Terrace Condominium, and was an active member of BPW, Altrusa, St Paul's UMC and St Marks UMC. In 1995 Arlene received an Iowa Governor's Award in Human Rights Service for her dedication to serve her community.
Arlene was very grateful for the close and caring bond she had with her sister, Verna. She especially loved family get-togethers; doting on her 3 nieces and her grand niece and 3 grand nephews; and traveling to most states and several foreign countries. She enjoyed theater, musical and sporting events; the Iowa State Fair; dogs and meeting her friends. She was generous, grateful, loyal and smiled a lot!
Arlene is lovingly remembered by her sister and brother-in-law, Verna Irene and William Edward Boland; her nieces, Brenda (Steve) Hamilton, Julie Boland and Cynthia Boland; her great niece, Katherine (Caleb) Brezina, and great nephews, Sean Hamilton, Joshua Boland and Jorge Boland.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Arlene and her family have deep appreciation for those who cared for her with respect and thoughtfulness, including staff at Right At Home, The Gardens and Essence of Life Hospice.
