Marion man’s kidnapping, sex abuse trial set for next month

Dec. 15, 2023 4:08 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — A trial for a Marion man, who is charged with kidnapping and sexual assault of a woman in an apartment complex in 2021, remains on track for Jan. 30, after being delayed several times.
Logan Mitchell Isaac, 32, is charged with one count each of first-degree kidnapping and willful injury causing bodily injury and two counts of third-degree sexual abuse.
During a Friday pretrial hearing, 6th Judicial District Judge Kevin McKeever confirmed with Isaac’s two lawyers and a prosecutor that both sides are prepared to go to trial next month in Linn County District Court.
The trial has been continued more than once because Isaac has changed lawyers and the case was temporarily on hold last year when Isaac’s lawyers asked that he undergo a competency evaluation. He was found competent in April 2022.
According to a criminal complaint, a woman told Marion police she had arranged to meet a man, later identified as Isaac, on April 24, 2021, to provide a massage at Moundview Manor, 2501 Highway 13.
After Isaac let the woman into the building, he attacked her and placed his arm around her mouth and neck and forced her into a bathroom.
He confined her in the bathroom, placed her in a headlock and forcefully “head-butted her several times, causing visible bodily injuries,” the complaint stated. He then sexually assaulted her.
Isaac was convicted in a second case when he threatened another woman with a knife on June 14, 2021. She told police Isaac was going to stab her, according to court documents.
Officers said that when they confronted Isaac after the woman reported the attack, he directed “profane epithets” toward them and tried to “head butt” one of the officers, according to a criminal complaint.
He was originally charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and assault on a peace officer, pleaded to lesser charges of assault and interference with officials acts. He was sentenced in March to 60 days in jail.
Isaac also picked up an additional charge of assault on a peace officer causing injury in January 2022 while in jail, for striking a Linn County Sheriff’s deputy in the face. He pleaded later to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct and was sentenced to 2 days in jail and time served.
He has remained in jail under a $750,000 bail pending trial since last year.
