CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Thursday on charges that he broke into a woman’s apartment earlier this month and left behind an explosive device.
Jared Allen Hanson, 36, is charged with second-degree burglary, stalking, violation of a no-contact order and possession of incendiary or explosive device with intent.
According to a criminal complaint, a woman reported that her apartment in the 3500 block of Edgewood Road NE had been broken into sometime between Dec. 10 and 11. Cedar Rapids police investigated the scene and found items the burglar had left behind, including an envelope that had artwork that had Hanson’s fingerprints and referenced content associated with him.
The woman later found an aluminum can with a green fuse coming from one end in the apartment. The Cedar Rapids Metro Hazardous Devices Unit was called and determined the can was an explosive device. It contained fireworks material and ignition powder, and had Hanson’s fingerprints on it, the complaint states.
Hanson was arrested Thursday during a traffic stop, according to a police news release. He had a cellphone with an app that police believed he used to track the woman’s location, the complaint said.
Police have taken several reports between Jan. 23 and Dec. 11 that Hanson had violated multiple no-contact orders prohibiting him from contacting the woman. The no-contact orders were filed during the adjudication of previous charges against Hanson for stalking, harassment and domestic abuse.
“According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the defendant has repeatedly engaged in a course of conduct directed toward (the woman) that has involved maintaining visual or physical proximity to her and conveying written threats to her or threats implied by conduct,” the complaint states.
Hanson had his first appearance in court Friday and was being held on a $25,000 cash-only bail.
