Sykora Bakery closes again

Dec. 12, 2023 3:10 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — Sykora Bakery, a legacy institution in the Czech Village neighborhood for a century, has closed again after a change in ownership.
Real estate signs have appeared again in the windows of the closed shop, which has been emptied after a recent remodeling.
It’s unclear when the bakery closed again.
The bakery started to undergo remodeling in the summer after closing on July 26. It reopened Sept. 15, according to social media posts, with plans to grow its hours through October.
The names of the bakery’s new owners were not announced. They purchased the bakery from previous owners John and Sue Rocarek, who operated Sykora for 22 years and oversaw it through the 2008 flood that devastated the Czech Village.
The historic site, built in 1900, began housing various bakeries in 1903. In 1927, Joseph and Clara Sykora started Sykora Bakery, operating it for nearly 40 years.
After Joseph’s death in 1966, the bakery was owned and operated by the couple’s sons, Lumir and Lester, until 1994.
