Campaign Almanac: Trump’s commanding lead increases in latest Iowa Poll
Former president’s support grows to more than 50 percent; Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley vying for distant second ahead of caucuses

Donald Trump’s stranglehold on the Republican presidential primary in Iowa continues — in fact, his lead grew — in the latest Iowa Poll from the Des Moines Register, NBC News and Mediacom.
Trump, the former president who is seeking a return to the White House, was the first choice of 51 percent of those surveyed in the latest Iowa Poll, far ahead of the remainder of the Republican presidential primary field.
That 51 percent is up 8 percentage points from Trump’s support in the October Iowa Poll.
Trump’s lead over the field increased to 32 points; Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis polled at 19 percent in the new Iowa Poll and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley was at 16 percent.
DeSantis and Haley are working to increase their support in Iowa and mount a challenge to Trump. DeSantis’ support increased 3 points from the October poll, while Haley’s support remained flat.
That lack of movement for the duo came despite recent endorsements for each: Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Christian conservative leader Bob Vander Plaats for DeSantis, and the Koch family-funded, conservative Americans for Prosperity advocacy organization for Haley.
No other candidates received more than 5 percent in the latest Iowa Poll.
The first-in-the-nation Iowa Republican caucuses will be held Jan. 15.
