CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids motorcyclist who crashed into a bus Wednesday while fleeing from police has died from his injuries, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Lewis McColley, 29, of Cedar Rapids, crashed a 1979 Yamaha motorcycle into a 2018 Forest River bus that was turning into a Casey’s gas station at the corner of Ellis Boulevard and O Avenue NW.
He had been fleeing Cedar Rapids police for about a minute before the crash. An officer had attempted to pull him over in the area of Sixth Street and Ninth Avenue SW for not having a license plate.
McColley wasn’t wearing a helmet and was thrown from his motorcycle in the crash. He was taken to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital with serious injuries, then transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where authorities said he was in critical condition Thursday. But he died later Thursday.
The driver of the bus — Mark Campbell, 63, of Cedar Rapids — was the only person in the vehicle and was not injured, authorities said.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department contacted the Linn County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the crash. The case remains under investigation.
