Harlan Robert Hamdorf, 91, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Stanwood, passed away on March 2, 2021, at St. Lukes Hospice Center.
He was born at home June 25, 1929, to Albert and Marie (Stoffregen) Hamdorf.
He attended School at Clarence, Lowden and Stanwood. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Austria.
Harlan married Ruth Wagamon on Oct. 20 1951, they divorced in Dec. 1970. He was then married to Sara Sharon from June 3, 1972, until her death in Dec. 2009. He was married to Velma Koehler from March 2014 until her death in Jan. 2016.
He farmed in the Stanwwod area from 1955 to 1962. He then drove truck for Skelgas until 1968. He worked for the Linn County Conservation Department from 1968 until his retirement in 1992.
He was a former member of the El Kahir Shrine Color Guard. He enjoyed gardening and playing cards. He loved to travel and enjoyed the outdoors and camping. He said his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
He is survived by a son, Rex (Mary) Hamdorf, Center Point; daughter, Leslie (John) Etheredge, Richmond, Va.; stepchildren, Marc (Jackie) Sharon, Concord, Calif., Marcia (Steve) Nicholsen, Apton, Calif., Gary (Pat) Kleinmeyer, Lonetree, Terry (Kathy) Kleinmeyer, Princeton, Minn., Larry (Linda) Kleinmeyer, Shueyville, Jerry (Sue) Kleinmeyer, Toddville, and Connie (Bob) Tomkins, Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Mike (Amelia) Hamdorf, Marion, Ryan (Jenn) Hamdorf, Cedar Rapids, Stacie (Ellen) Valkevich, Concord, Calif., and Stephanie Nicholsen, Apton, Calif.; brother, Wesley (Roberta) Hamdorf, Hiawatha; sister, Carol Kurth, Robins; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Marjorie (Fred) Lehrman, Stanwood, and Marion McWilliams, California.
Celebration of Life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at First United Methodist Church, 5050 REC Dr., Marion, IA 52302. Funeral will also be at First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Friday, March 12. Internment will be at a later date at Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.
