Preserve schools that are testaments to education

Growing up in the Iowa City area gave me an appreciation for brick and mortar testaments to education in the downtown area. Henry Sabin elementary and Horace Mann elementary were examples of the architecture devoted to education! Multi storied, beautiful facades, they oozed “place of learning!”
Iowa City lost Henry Sabin school to redevelopment, but chose to retain Horace Mann with a total upgrade and aesthetic expansion. Mann has become an excellent, modern learning center while remaining a bulwark of architectural history.
When the people of Cedar Rapids look at Harrison elementary, I hope the same emotional reaction develops. A need to preserve some elements that have served the city so beautifully for so many years. Harrison is a testament to education in Cedar Rapids as well as its architecture.
