CEDAR RAPIDS — A Door Dash delivery driver killed in an October shooting at a Cedar Rapids apartment complex parking lot was shot six times, according to a criminal complaint against Cameron Leonard, one of the people police believe were involved in the shootout.
Leonard, 25, of Cedar Rapids, is charged with the first-degree murder of Myron Snyder, 21, of Cedar Rapids. He’s also charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent, use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime and being a person ineligible to carry a dangerous weapon.
Leonard was arrested last week by U.S. marshals in Burlington after he was released from the hospital, where he was taken to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds after the Oct. 5 shooting.
According to a criminal complaint, Leonard’s brother, Maurice Brown — who was also killed in the shooting — placed a Door Dash order that was delivered by Snyder. Brown, 21, of Cedar Rapids, knew Snyder and “there had been a previous conflict between them,” the complaint said without elaboration.
Police retrieved surveillance video from a nearby building that showed Brown and Leonard approaching Snyder, who was parked in the lot of 3960 Sherman St. NE. Brown and Snyder got into a physical fight, while Leonard “took off his shirt and stood by while armed and likely displaying a firearm,” the complaint states.
Snyder got into his car and tried to back out of his parking spot to leave, but Brown fired three shots at Snyder’s car while standing in front of it. Brown then approached the driver’s side of the vehicle with the hammer of his revolver cocked back, the complaint states.
Snyder — whose mother earlier told The Gazette he had a concealed carry license — fired back at Brown from inside his car, killing Brown. Leonard then shot into Snyder’s car. Snyder got out of his car and fired back at Leonard several times. Leonard continued firing at Snyder, and Snyder eventually died from gunshot wounds in his heart and head, according to the complaint.
Leonard then reloaded his gun and circled the car until he collapsed because of his injuries. Evidence found on the scene showed he had fired at least 13 gunshots and at least eight of them entered the car. Snyder had been shot six times by the time he died, the complaint states.
Police were called to the scene at 8:21 p.m. and found Brown and Snyder both dead. Leonard was taken to a hospital and later released. He was not arrested immediately because the investigation still was ongoing, according to Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks.
Another man, Pierre Danyon Morrow, 40, of Cedar Rapids, was also arrested last week in relation to the shooting.
According to criminal complaints, police found two guns on scene, which were believed to be the guns used by Snyder and Brown. The gun used by Leonard was not present, and police believe Morrow — the stepdad of Brown and Leonard — took it and hid it in his house after the shooting.
Morrow is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, accessory after the fact and obstructing prosecution or defense. He’s being held in the Linn County Jail on a cash-only $25,000 bail.
The investigation into the shooting included analyzing evidence from the scene and surveillance video and conducting interviews with on-scene witnesses, Leonard and a person who Snyder was talking to on the phone before the shooting, according to the complaint. Snyder’s mother, Alicia Rogers, previously told The Gazette that she had been on the phone with her son at the time of the shooting.
“He’s never been in any type of trouble whatsoever. He may have a speeding ticket on his record. He went to Washington High School. He did basketball and football all four years,” Rogers said. “He’s an amazing kid, and I’m not saying that just because it’s my kid.”
Besides delivering for DoorDash, Snyder also worked part time with the Boys and Girls Club of the Corridor. The First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cedar Rapids said shortly after the shooting it was raising money for the family. A separate GoFundMe page was also started and had raised over $4,000 by Tuesday afternoon.
Brown and Leonard’s family also started a GoFundMe page to help with the cost of medical care for Leonard and funeral costs for Brown. That page had raised over $1,100 as of Tuesday.
Leonard was transferred to Linn County and had his first appearance in court Tuesday. He is being held in the Linn County Jail on a cash-only $1 million bail.
