Wheelbarrow in roadway leads to fatal accident on Dubuque Bridge

A chain of events triggered by a wheelbarrow in the road on the bridge spanning the Iowa/Wisconsin Border led to a fatal accident Saturday.

According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, at around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday a Toyota RAV4 collided with a wheelbarrow in the travel portion of the inside lane on highway US 61 on the Dubuque - Wisconsin Bridge.

After the collision, the occupants of the Toyota stepped out of the vehicle to assess the damage. According to the report, it was at this point that the Toyota was struck by a Kia Forte.

One person was killed and three people were injured in the resulting accident, according to the report. Those with injuries were all transported to different hospitals for treatment, with one of the injured people being airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The names of the occupants of both vehicles are being withheld by the Iowa State Patrol pending the completion of an investigation and the notification of family members.
