Merlyn “Andy” Viggo Andersen, 85, of Delaware, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. Visitation will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Delaware. Funeral Service will follow at 1 p.m. at the church, Reverend Mathew Vesey officiating. Burial with Military Honors will take place at Pineview Cemetery, Delaware, Iowa. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Manchester is in charge of arrangements.
Merlyn was born on Aug. 7, 1938, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Theodor “Ted” and Pearl (Guttenfelder) Andersen. He graduated from Atlantic High School in 1956 and served in the National Guard from July 17, 1961, to July 16, 1968. Merlyn married Marlene Chipman on Oct. 29, 1960, in Atlantic, Iowa. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 42 years as a bridge supervisor and inspector. Merlyn was very active in the community on the Delaware Fire Department, City Council, and was an elder at St. Paul Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing, playing cards, cribbage, fast pitch softball. Merlyn had a very dry sense of humor and loved to joke around, helped those in need, was the best husband, dad, and grandpa anyone could ever have. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Merlyn is survived by his wife, Marlene Andersen of Delaware; daughter, Merchon Andersen of Delaware; grandchildren, LaChon Andersen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Lisa Souza of Old Town, Fla., Kyla Johnson of Jesup, Iowa, Dustin Faust of Farley, Iowa, Tessa Andersen of Morrisville, N.C., Jessica Andersen of Center Point, Iowa; several great-grandchildren; honorary son, Tim Glass; daughter-in-law, Amy Reeves; and close friend, Trish Glass.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Pearl Andersen; son, Merlyn “Skip” Andersen; brothers, Bernard (Joan), and Delbert (Ramona) Andersen, and infant brothers, Dallas and Billy Andersen.
