Bond’s ‘yes’ voters still hesitant over Harrison demolition

I voted for the Cedar Rapids Schools bond issue. I have supported school bond issues in the past because I believe public school students deserve the best of educational opportunities and facilities our community can provide.
Unrelated to my vote or what is on the ballot, is my keen disappointment that the board decided to demolish Harrison Elementary. And I am not alone. One cannot underestimate that decision’s impact on voter attitudes. In a city with a history of destroying its past architectural icons with less aesthetic or durable replacements, this decision is particularly upsetting.
Harrison is the architectural gem of the Cedar Rapids Community School system. It is beautiful, and if ever there was a time when our community should rise and say “Not again!“ this is the time.
Consider the new explosion of high-rise construction in Cedar Rapids. There is nothing that distinguishes them, nothing to inspire the eye or allow the community to express appreciation for the architectural beauty they present. Harrison stands in stark contrast, and despite a committee’s endorsement of its preservation the decision was made to tear it down.
The bond failed for many reasons. Don’t underestimate that the Harrison decision may have been a significant contributing factor, and although I disdain single issue voting, I admit it was a consideration.
