Rutgers and Iowa. Rivalry game? Umm, no. But that doesn’t stop Fun Facts.
1. Iowa is 3-0 against Rutgers, outscoring the Scarlet Knights 71-17.
2. The Scarlet Knights had five first downs in their only other game in Iowa City, a 30-0 loss in 2019.
3. Iowa’s defense has allowed one touchdown in its last 12 quarters, and one touchdown or less in 16 of its last 22 games.
4. Rutgers offensive line coach Pat Flaherty was an assistant on Kirk Ferentz’s first Iowa team, in 1999.
5. In the last three years, FBS teams are 4-49 when they’ve gained less than 170 yards. Iowa has all four of those wins, the most-recent last week against Northwestern.
6. Three Iowa players from New Jersey were consensus All-Americans: Andre Tippett, Leroy Smith and Shonn Greene.
7. Iowa is second in the nation in yards allowed per pass attempt, with 4.85. It is next-to-last in yards per pass attempt, with 4.91.
8. Rutgers, Iowa and Navy are the only FBS teams that have completed less than half of their pass attempts. Gavin Wimsatt of Rutgers has the lowest completion percentage (49.0 percent) among FBS quarterbacks with enough attempts to qualify for the national leaders. Iowa’s Deacon Hill has completed 41.6 percent, but is at 66.7 percent in November.
9. Rutgers (6-1-2) has one of the nation’s best records against closing point spreads. Iowa is 4-4-1.
10. This is the first game in college football history to have an opening over/under line (29 points) under 30. The “under” has paid off in seven of Iowa’s nine games. Only Arizona (8 of 9) has been a more-reliable “under” pick.
11. The Hawkeyes are averaging 225.3 yards per game. No team playing a 12-game schedule averaged less since Wake Forest’s 216.3 in 2014. Iowa’s high in the last 10 years was 386.1 yards in 2015, and that ranked 72nd in the nation.
12. Iowa’s Anterio Thompson leads the nation in blocked kicks per game with 0.5 (two in four games).
13. The Hawkeyes held Northwestern to 81 passing yards last Saturday, the lowest total they have allowed since 47 to Rutgers in 2019.
14. Iowa has Atlantic, the hometown of Ed Podolak. New Jersey has Atlantic City, the hometown of King Kong Bundy. Atlantic is over 1,200 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
15. The USS New Jersey is an Iowa-class battleship.
16. Iowa has 55,875 square miles, New Jersey 7,419. New Jersey has 9.3 million people, Iowa 3.2 million.
17. Rutgers running back Kyle Monangai is the only Big Ten player averaging over 100 rushing yards per game. He is 97 yards from being the Scarlet Knights’ first 1,000-yard rusher since 2012.
18. Monangai is from Roseland, N.J., 20 miles west of New York City. In 2014, the famed Roseland Ballroom in New York closed. Everybody who was anybody performed there, including Prince, Madonna, Ella Fitzgerald, Nirvana, Beyonce, Count Basie, the Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, and Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros.
19. Roseland Ballroom was demolished to make way for a 62-story rental tower.
20. Bob Dylan performed at Rutgers in 1965. Johnny Cash was in the audience.
