College football 2023 Week 10 picks: Iowa vs. Northwestern, Kansas vs. Iowa State, Nebraska vs. Michigan State
The Gazette
Nov. 2, 2023 7:00 pm
The Gazette’s Pick ‘Ems panel has score predictions for three games every week during the college football season, including the Iowa and Iowa State games. Here are the picks for Saturday, Nov. 4.
Iowa (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) vs. Northwestern (4-4, 2-3), at Wrigley Field
2:30 p.m. (Peacock streaming)
Mike Hlas (2-1 last week, 15-12 overall) — A game at Wrigley Field, huh? Those Cubs concessions prices should tick off the rubes. Iowa 9, Northwestern 6 (10 innings)
John Steppe (3-0, 17-10) — The Medill Mafia has nothing on the Marquette Mafia. Iowa 21, Northwestern 9
Jeff Johnson (3-0, 18-9) — Any news that has come out of these two programs this fall? Iowa 9, Northwestern 3
Rob Gray (3-0, 20-7) — The Hawkeyes and Wildcats suddenly seem to be going in different directions. I find Northwestern’s 33-27 win over a solid Maryland team to be baffling, but it happened, so cannot be dismissed. Iowa’s loss to Minnesota at home makes this a gut-check game for the Hawkeyes, who obviously already have faced plenty of turmoil this week. Iowa 19, Northwestern 17
Beth Malicki (2-1, 16-11) — My husband’s car broke down and I accurately diagnosed the problem and assisted with the repair. He will never doubt me again. Iowa 24, Northwestern 13
Todd Brommelkamp (3-0, 15-12) — Careful what you wish for. Rumor has it Cubs Manager David Ross will interview this weekend to be Iowa’s new offensive coordinator. Iowa 21, Northwestern 18
No. 21 Kansas (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) at Iowa State (5-3, 4-1)
6 p.m. (ESPN)
Hlas — A good time is going to Lawrence, Kan., calling it “Larry,” and ticking off the rubes. Iowa State 24, Kansas 17
Steppe — Is Taylor Swift going to be at this game? Oh wait, wrong football team with Kansas in its name. Kansas 35, Iowa State 30
Johnson — I’d kinda say Iowa State is catching the ol’ Jayhawks at a pretty good time right now. And at a pretty good place. Iowa State 28, Kansas 20
Gray — The last time the Cyclones faced a ranked Kansas team in Ames was in 2008 — when head coach Mark Mangino had the Jayhawks riding high. ISU led by as many as 20 points, but lost, 35-33. Expect a similarly competitive game on Saturday night at Jack Trice Stadium, but if either team builds a 20-point lead, a comeback win would be unlikely. Kansas has an elite rushing offense. The Cyclones are returning to form as a very good rushing defense. As usual, a turnover or two likely determines the outcome of this one — and the home team’s shined in this area this season. Iowa State 31, Kansas 27
Malicki — Follow me for more marriage tips. For example, separate rooms due to illness, snoring and consumption of bean dip are crucial. Kansas 35, Iowa State 31
Brommelkamp — I’m not saying Kansas will have an OU hangover here, but don’t be surprised if Zach Galifianakis and Mike Tyson’s pet tiger are spotted on the KU sideline. Iowa State 28, Kansas 24
Nebraska (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) at Michigan State (2-6, 0-5)
11 a.m. (FS1)
Hlas — In 2004, Texas Tech beat Nebraska, 70-10. That has no bearing on this game. It’s just fun to tick off the rubes. Nebraska 17, Michigan State 14
Steppe — It’s been almost a year since Michigan State’s last Big Ten win. That’s also how long it takes for me to finally get around to cleaning my apartment. Kidding (somewhat). Nebraska 16, Michigan State 14
Johnson — Nebraska’s gonna win the Big Ten West. Book it. Nebraska 24, Michigan State 13
Gray — It’s hard to believe Nebraska hasn’t put together a winning season since 2016, but it’s true. Head coach Matt Rhule has the Cornhuskers two wins from ensuring that changes and it’s unlikely the Spartans will offer sustained resistance in what’s been a lost season in East Lansing. Nebraska 30, Michigan State 17
Malicki — I wear false eyelashes and press-on nails, but these Pick ’Ems are all original. I don’t even rely on artificial intelligence. Nebraska 28, Michigan State 17
Brommelkamp — Don’t look now but the Huskers have won three straight and five of their last six. Nebraska 23, Michigan State 17
