CEDAR RAPIDS — The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success is diving deep into topics on race, social inequities and their impact on youth in the fourth of Critical Conversations, a free learning opportunity for adults.
Critical Conversations is a free learning opportunity that meets the second Monday of each month at the Cedar Rapids Public Library Beems Conference Room A, 450 Fifth Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids. A virtual option also is available.
The program is a part of The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success, which was founded more than 30 years ago to provide students an education they can’t find in a public school classroom. It teaches students about Black history, literature, math and science, and offers a postsecondary seminar to help students prepare for college and succeed once they get there.
This season of Critical Conversations asks the question “How Did We Get Here,” and discusses education, the political landscape, the medical field and the business world.
The second session of the series — 6 p.m. on Nov. 20 — will discuss the ripple effect of banning books and what teachers are allowed to teach. Registration is required at theacademysps.com/what-we-do/#critical-conversations.
Over the next six months, Critical Conversations will address the following topics:
- Are children safer when schools employ a resource officer — a police officer in schools?
- What is the difference between having the right to vote vs. having the ability to vote?
- How is the health and wellness industry different for Black Americans?
- What are the benefits of diversity, equity and inclusion programs?
