Iowa high school volleyball 2023 regional finals roundup: 2A and 1A scores, state tournament brackets

The 2023 Iowa high school state volleyball tournament field is set after Wednesday’s regional finals in Class 2A and 1A.
The state tournament begins Monday at Xtream Arena in Coralville. Class 2A and 1A teams will play quarterfinal matches Tuesday.
Here’s a look at Wednesday’s regional finals, plus the state tournament brackets in those two classes. (If you missed it, here’s a review of Tuesday’s Class 5A, 4A and 3A regional finals and a look at those state tournament brackets).
Wednesday’s Class 2A regional finals
No. 4 Denver 3, West Branch 1 (23-25, 25-9, 25-16, 25-18) — Denver (34-10) served 17 aces and shrugged off a sluggish start, defeating West Branch (18-17) at Union Community High School.

No. 1 Dike-New Hartford 3, Guthrie Center ACGC 0 (25-7, 25-5, 25-7) — The 47-0 Wolverines are heading to state for the 33rd time with a convincing sweep against ACGC (21-11). Runner-up last year, the Dike-New Hartford and Dike program has won 15 state volleyball championships.
No. 2 Hinton 3, Rock Valley 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-14) — A sweep of Rock Valley (20-9) sends 2022 state semifinalist Hinton (30-1) back to Coralville.
No. 3 Grundy Center 3, No. 13 West Burlington 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-15) — Grundy Center (37-7) is returning to state after a three-year hiatus. West Burlington finished 38-6.
No. 5 Sumner-Fredericksburg 3, No. 10 Wapsie Valley 0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-16) — The Cougars (28-13) moved on to the state tournament for the 10th time in the last 12 years; they were quarterfinalists a year ago. Wapsie Valley went 28-19.
No. 6 Carroll Kuemper 3, No. 9 Ridge View 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) — It’s back-to-back state tournament appearances for the Knights (34-6), who recently qualified eight times in nine years from 2011 to 2019. Ridge View’s season wrapped up with a 34-9 record.
No. 8 Aplington-Parkersburg 3, No. 12 South Hardin 2 (24-26, 25-14, 25-27, 25-22, 15-13) — The Falcons (34-8) clinched their first state tournament bid since 2008 by rallying past South Hardin (35-9) in the lone five-set match of the night.
No. 15 Eddyville EBF 3, Tri-Center 0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-15) — EBF (26-7) is going back to state after advancing to last season’s semifinals. Tri-Center finished 26-10.

No. 1 Dike-New Hartford (47-0) vs. No. 15 Eddyville EBF (26-7), 2 p.m.
No. 4 Denver (34-10) vs. No. 5 Sumner-Fredericksburg (28-13), 4 p.m.
No. 2 Hinton (30-1) vs. No. 8 Aplington-Parkersburg (34-8), 2:25 p.m.
No. 3 Grundy Center (37-7) vs. No. 6 Carroll Kuemper (34-6), 4:25 p.m.

Wednesday’s Class 1A regional finals
No. 3 Fort Madison Holy Trinity 3, No. 12 Edgewood-Colesburg 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-7) — In their first regional final since 2005, the Vikings (29-16) fell to Fort Madison Holy Trinity (33-10) at West Liberty High School. The Crusaders are state bound for the 16th time since 2005.

No. 10 Don Bosco 3, No. 5 North Tama 0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-20) — Don Bosco (24-16) beat North Tama (25-16) for the fourth time this season, and this one was the most meaningful yet. The Dons advanced last year as well.
No. 1 Ankeny Christian 3, Oakland Riverside 0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-12) — Ankeny Christian (36-3) won’t be sneaking up on anyone this year after surprising observers by winning the state championship in its first tournament trip last season. Riverside’s season ended at 27-11.
No. 2 Boyden-Hull 3, No. 15 River Valley 0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-18) — Boyden-Hull (21-11) is state bound for the third time in four years. The Comets will be favored to advance further this time. River Valley went 25-7.
No. 4 Conrad BCLUW 3, Lynnville-Sully 0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-14) — BCLUW (34-10) cruised past Lynnville-Sully (17-13) in a matchup of schools seeking their first state tournament appearance.
No. 9 Saint Ansgar 3, No. 6 Janesville 0 (25-18, 25-16, 30-28) — The Saints (24-6) knocked off Janesville (27-12) to book their first trip to state since 1988.
Newell-Fonda 3, No. 8 Ackley AGWSR 1 (25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 25-19) — Newell-Fonda (21-8) took down eighth-ranked AGWSR (18-24) of the powerhouse North Iowa Cedar League to earn its first state volleyball tournament berth.
No. 11 Council Bluffs St. Albert 3, East Mills 0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-19) — St. Albert (23-14) swept East Mills (29-12) to qualify for the ninth time.
