Gwen Casady
Iowa City
Gwen Casady, 95, of Iowa City, passed away on Oct. 21, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital.
Gwen was born on March 20, 1928 ,in Bloomfield, Iowa, to John and Mary “Lucille” (Rhodes) Hoglan. She graduated high school in Cherokee, Iowa, in 1946 and then obtained her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1951. Gwen worked to set up and orchestrate banquets for the university while also serving as a food supervisor at the Iowa Memorial Union from 1951-1958.
On May 25, 1958, Gwen married Donald Casady in Iowa City and to this union, three children were born. During this time, she enjoyed being a devoted mother and busy housewife. Gwen returned to work as a teacher’s aide in Iowa City from 1983-1990.
Gwen was an avid sports fan. She loved rooting for Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball. She also enjoyed suntanning and socializing at the Elks Club where she and Don were lifelong members. Winters away in Florida were something she always looked forward to…much like her family and friends looked forward to her famous homemade apple pie! She could never pass up an opportunity to cook and bake for the people that mattered most in her life.
Gwen is survived by her children, Martin Casady, Richard Casady and Kevin (Michelle) Casady; grandchildren, Ryan Casady and Jordan (John) Bellenfant; as well as her great-grandchildren, Ryman and Leighton Bellenfant and another great-grandchild on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Don; and her siblings, Barbara Miller and Vic Hoglan.
Per Gwen’s request, cremation has been accorded and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity or foundation of the donor’s choice.
