I am Molly Abraham and I’m running for Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) School Board. In September 2022, I was appointed to fill a board vacancy and since then, I have immersed myself in ICCSD policy and governance.
Before I became a school board member, I worked for 38 years at West High School. I spent the first 18 years as a special-education teacher, and the last 20 years as an assistant principal. My husband Dave Walz and I have three adult daughters who greatly benefited from their excellent ICCSD education. I fully retired in June 2022 but I can’t resist a chance to continue to serve ICCSD public education.
Over the years, the district has changed its approaches to education, increased its investment in facilities, and shown a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. I have learned a lot about what works. I have also built strong relationships with administrators, teachers, staff, students, and families. My experience informs my top priorities for public education, including:
● Equity in access to high quality instruction and top-notch facilities for all students.
● Retention and recruitment of diverse and highly qualified staff.
● .Commitment to the supports and services provided to students with IEPs and 504 plans
● Realization of dynamic programming at the ICCSD Center for Innovation.
On Nov. 7, you will choose between seven candidates running for four open school board seats. I hope I have your vote.
