LaVerne “Butch” Paul Forbes, 80, of Iowa City, IA passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital in the early morning of October 18, 2023.
Butch was an active member of the Iowa City area community, and he knew what it meant to provide support by showing up—he modeled it. His family is closer and will always be more connected because of those efforts, and for that we are all forever grateful.
Butch is survived by his wife Bonnie; children Dr. Lance Forbes, D.D.S., and Mindy Forbes (Travis Graber); grandchildren, Ryan Forbes-Shellady (Victoria Shellady), Anna and Abby Forbes, Colt and Sage Graber; brother David Forbes; brother-in-law Woodrow Houser, and sister-in-law Christa Houser. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Allene Forbes and by in-laws, Walter and Helen Houser, and William, Anton, and Lawrence Houser.
A visitation will take place on Tuesday, October 24 at Lensing Funeral Home located at 605 Kirkwood Ave. in Iowa City from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. A short service of remembrance, led by Butch’s grandson, Ryan Forbes-Shellady, will start at 7:00 p.m. A graveside service with military honors provided by the American Legion will take place Saturday, October 28 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Iowa City followed by a luncheon at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr Craig Champion and Jessie for their great care of Butch over many years. A full obituary may be found at www.lensingfuneral.com.
