Mark Allen Smith, 59, of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023, at the Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, Iowa, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023, at All Saints Catholic Church located at 720 29th Street SE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with visitation one hour prior to service. Inurnment will be after the service at Campbell Cemetery in rural Cedar Rapids. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mark was born on August 4, 1964, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Curtis and Mary (Diers) Smith and, soon after, they moved to an acreage near Mt. Vernon. He was a 1983 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and went on to attend Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids. Mark loved working at Wathan Flying Service, his dad’s business. He loved flying and airplanes and even earned his pilot’s license before his driver’s license. Mark worked for Collins Aerospace in Coralville for over 35 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was known for growing super large pumpkins. Mark will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mark is survived and lovingly remembered by his mother, Mary of Cedar Rapids; brothers, Craig Smith of rural Mt. Vernon and David Smith of Arlington, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
