IOWA CITY — Following a difficult loss to a rival, Iowa City Regina was in need of a palette cleanser.
The Regals wiped the slate clean and got back to their high-flying ways, dispatching Dyersville Beckman, 48-21, Friday night in prep football game at Regina.
Sandwiched between last week’s 21-17 setback at West Branch and a big showdown with Class 1A fifth-ranked Wilton, the Blazers provided an opportunity to get right. Lamenting missed opportunities in their loss to the Bears, the ninth-ranked Regals hope the setback propels them to a deep postseason run.
“Coming off last week’s loss and watching film, we just made so many mental errors,” Regina Coach Jason Dumont said. “The message tonight was, we just need to clean that up. I thought we did a good job of that.”
“We flushed that last game down the toilet,” Regina receiver Ty Joss said. “We learned from all the mistakes we had. We regained that momentum and we’re getting ready for the playoffs.”
From the onset, it was clear that this would be no trap game.
On the first play from scrimmage, Gentry Dumont slung a quick pass to the right. Joss secured the catch and trucked 61 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown 19 seconds into the game.
“I actually messed up last week going inside,” Joss said. “I fixed that. I went outside. I went with my blockers. I trusted them.”
Regina do-it-all two-way star Jackson Naeve came into the night with passing, rushing, receiving and kickoff return touchdowns. Following a three-and-out, he added a punt return touchdown to the list.
Naeve secured the catch at his own 36, picked up a few blocks, and took it down the left sideline for a 64-yard score. The Regals seized a 14-0 lead with 9:47 remaining in the first quarter.
Facing a difficult schedule, Dyersville Beckman (1-6, 1-3) had scored just 16 points since a season-opening win over Durant. On fourth-and-goal from the Regina 29, TJ Thier lofted a perfectly placed pass to Nathan Forrest for a touchdown.
It was the last thing that went well for the Blazers in the first half.
Tanner Ostwinkle knelt on the ground fielding a punt snap. The Blazers lost a fumble and Naeve hauled in an interception, coming 12 yards shy of adding a defensive touchdown to his resume.
The Regals turned the consistently short field into quick points. Regina entered the half with a 45-7 lead. The Regals forced four turnovers on the night.
Joss hauled in three of Dumont’s four touchdown passes. Naeve added a rushing score from a yard out, giving him 18 touchdowns this season.
“Our line was doing a great job, giving Gentry a lot of time.,” Joss said. “Our coach did a good job play calling. We had the right play calls. It was a team effort.”
Dumont finished his short night a very efficient 9-for-11 with 143 yards. He now has 20 touchdown passes this season.
“We worked a lot on our bubble game this week,” Coach Dumont said. “I thought they executed that really well.”
