James Allen Gatewood, 76, was born April 29, 1947, and passed on Sept. 13, 2023, in Cedar Rapids. James was in the U.S. Army as a member of the 3rd BCT, 25th Infantry
Division
from 1966 to 1972 and severed in Vietnam 11 months 25 days prior to his Honorable Discharge.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Gatewood and Dorothy (nee McDaniel) Gatewood; his brothers, Robert Gatewood, Gary Gatewood, Douglas Gatewood and Gregory McDaniel; and sister, Deb Gatewood.
James is survived by daughter, Kathy (Thomas) Patrick; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a son, James Gatewood from Iowa; sisters Kathy (Al) Dickerson of Iowa Brenda (Kirk) Smith of Arizona, Robin McDaniel of Iowa, Cindy (Werner) Schmalzl, of California, Trudy (Frank) Teslik of Iowa, Angela (Curtis) Ahlers of Iowa, Laurie (Randy) Hanson of Iowa and Cassandra Gatewood of Iowa; and brothers, Donald Gatewood of Iowa, Louis McDaniel of Iowa and David McDaniel of Iowa.
James Gatewood was a strong believer in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a member of the First Open Bible Church most of his life. First Open Bible with Pastor Harris Holsapple, would like to invite family and Friends to join us in honoring the life of James Gatewood on Oct. 12, at the First Open Bible Church located in Cedar Rapids. Visitation is at 10 a.m. with service at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon at the church after the conclusion of the Veteran's Salute at 12:15 p.m.
