A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at Hope United Church of Christ in Hiawatha, with the Rev. Fredrich Mellberg officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Zane was born on Dec. 28, 1933, in Ames, Iowa, the son of Willfred and Lillie (Scott) Sharp. He married Deloris Yorgensen on Dec. 26, 1953. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage. In their first years of marriage, they traveled for work and then settled in Cedar Rapids in 1957. He was employed by Quaker Oats and retired in April of 1996, after 29 years of service.
Zane was a charter member of Hope United Church of Christ. Zane & Deloris were season ticket holders and avid Iowa Women’s Hawkeyes basketball fans. Being a sports lover, Zane enjoyed going bowling, golfing, fishing and boating. Above all, he loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all their activities. Some of his most talked about memories were playing catch or basketball with his granddaughter, Amanda. Zane enjoyed helping his grandson, Jacob accomplish getting his Boy Scout merit badges. Zane loved to tell us stories of his family and all the memories he has from his wonderful long life. He especially loved to listen to his daughter play the piano, at home or in church. He also had a special kind of wit and strong handshake. Zane could make anyone laugh with his sense of humor. Zane will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, father-in-law, uncle and friend.
Zane was preceded in death by his parents, spouse, Deloris; two brothers, Willfred Sharp II and Charles Sharp; a stepfather, Cullen Ringgenberg; and a stepbrother, Delbert Ringgenberg
Left to cherish Zanes’ memories is his children, Robert Sharp, of Austin, Texas, and Debora (Gay) Strunk, of Marion, Iowa; grandchildren, Natalie (Greg) Scheuber, Thomas (Julia) Strunk, Matt (Laura) Strunk, Jacob Strunk, Danielle Sharp and Amanda (Jim Speich) Strunk; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Isabelle, Chloe, Amelia, Gregory, Alexander, Aksel, William, Enzo and Jasper Zane; sister-in-law, Dorothy Sharp; and many loving extended family members.
A special thanks to Mercy Medical Center and Hospice of Mercy for their care and compassion during this time.
