Here’s our Week 6 roundup with Iowa high school football scores, stats and complete Gazette-area coverage.
4A No. 1 Western Dubuque 35, Marion 7
Western Dubuque is no one-trick pony.
Sure, the focus is on workhorse running back Grant Glausser and his 1,230 yards and 13 touchdowns. Rightfully so, but the team has a lineup of play-making thoroughbreds.
“We love Grant but everybody on the team is very valuable,” Western Dubuque quarterback Tanner Anderson said. “We have our whole wide receiver corps and I can’t forget about our offensive line. They’re the reason I can get all these passes off.”
Well, they all ran roughshod Friday night.
Anderson threw touchdown passes to three different receivers, in addition to a score by Glausser, leading top-ranked Western Dubuque to a 35-7 victory over Marion in a Class 4A District 2 prep football game at Marion Stadium. The Bobcats scored all of their points before halftime and posted their seventh straight win over the Wolves.
“We had a really good week of practice and it helped us work on our plays,” Anderson said. “As a team, we grew stronger together and it helped overall.”
Western Dubuque (5-1, 2-0) scored on its first four possessions of the game, including two Anderson TD passes for a 14-0 lead with 2:01 left in the first quarter. Anderson capped an 80-yard drive with a 14-yard score to Hunter Quagliano. His 11-yard pass to Ryan Digmann capped a 75-yard, nine-play series.

5A No. 7 Cedar Rapids Kennedy 34, 5A No. 3 Bettendorf 14
After an 0-2 start, they’re back on the rails, picking up steam.
And, according to Trevor Scott ...
“This is Kennedy football, and this train isn’t gonna stop for nobody.”
Class 5A seventh-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy spotted No. 3 Bettendorf the first touchdown, then dominated from there for its fourth consecutive victory, 34-14, Friday night at Kingston Stadium.
“I’m very happy,” Kennedy Coach Brian White said. “Bettendorf is a very good, physical football team. They’re back.
“But we made a lot of plays. Our running backs were dynamite. Our offensive line was dynamite. Our quarterback was dynamite.
“Our defense gave up some stuff, but we made some corrections and played a lot better in the second half.”
Jacob Doyle ran for 150 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown. Scott added 105 yards on 12 totes and three TDs.
Vincenzo Gianforte completed his first nine passes, finishing 11 of 14 for 150 yards.
Yeah, dynamite, dynamite, dynamite.

4A No. 8 Cedar Rapids Xavier 26, 4A No. 4 North Scott 20
You watched Kyler Gerardy and his North Scott teammates do basically whatever they wanted in their first three offensive possessions Friday night and figured there was no way Cedar Rapids Xavier had a chance to win this battle of ranked Class 4A football teams.
But then ...
The Saints kept the ball away from the ultra-talented, multi-dimensional quarterback via a relentless clock-draining ground attack, shifting momentum and letting their defense regroup. Those patterns continued the rest of the game, especially the second half, and allowed Xavier to come from behind and post a 26-20 win at Saints Field.
North Scott came in ranked fourth and Xavier eighth. Both are now 4-2.
“You’ve been around me long enough,” said Xavier Coach Duane Schulte. “We’re never going to say we’re satisfied. We’re happy with the win, the kids had a great week of practice, and it’s nice to see that it paid off for them.”
Quarterback Ronan Thomas’ 1-yard touchdown sneak late in the third quarter tied things and his 2-yard TD run with 1:56 won things. Gerardy, who had two touchdown runs and a TD pass, unfortunately ended up injuring what appeared to be his right knee on North Scott’s final possession, falling to the ground in obvious pain after making a cut on a 7-yard run that converted a fourth-and-2 play with just over a minute left.
Junior tailback Noah Schimberg had 23 carries for 134 yards and two touchdowns for Xavier.

3A No. 7 Solon 16, Benton Community 13 (2OT)
Class 3A No. 7 Solon (5-1) defeated Benton Community, 16-13, in a double-overtime thriller Friday night in a pivotal District 5 battle.
Benton kicker Caleb Gessner connected on a 26-yard field goal to give the Bobcats a 13-10 advantage in the first overtime period.
Solon’s offense stalled at the 5, forcing Grant Knipper to make a 22-yard field goal to extend the game.
He did.
“It felt relieving,” Knipper said. “We needed it.”
The Spartans then started with the ball in double overtime. Benton’s defense again held strong, stopping Solon at the 8.
Knipper lined up for a 25-yard field goal this time.
Money.
“He just makes plays happen,” Solon Coach Lucas Stanton said. “To make those kicks you have to have some ice in your veins.”
“I’m just trying to stay locked in the best I can,” Knipper said. “Obviously, there’s a lot of things that can go wrong, but you just have to stay focused.”
Trailing by 3, Benton elected to go for the win on fourth-and-goal from the 2.
Solon’s defensive front stuffed the Bobcats right at the goal line to seal the win.
“They’ve (defense) given it their all, not just this game but all season,” Knipper said. “It’s amazing.”

Linn-Mar 35, Muscatine 9
There was no doubt Dylan Muszynski was excited to be back.
After injuring his ankle in a Week 3 loss to Cedar Rapids Kennedy, the Linn-Mar junior wingback could only watch the next two weeks as his teammates fell to Bettendorf and Cedar Falls.
“I've been waiting for this for a couple of weeks,” Muszynski said. “It felt great to be back out here with my guys.”
And his guys were more than happy to have their big play guy back for Friday night's game against Muscatine at Linn-Mar Stadium.
The 5-foot-8, 175-pound junior made his mark right away, taking off on a 65-yard run on his second carry. He finished with 198 yards on 25 carries and caught two passes for another 33 yards as the Lions snapped their three-game losing streak with an impressive, 35-9, win over the Muskies.
“It felt amazing,” Muszynski said about his ankle. “I was able to cut really well and it was great to have the (offensive) line make some big holes for me.”

5A No. 8 Ankeny 17, 5A No. 10 Cedar Rapids Prairie 14
Ankeny (4-2) struck first early in the first quarter. No. 10 Prairie's offense was not able to get going in the first half, as Will Phillips racked up three interceptions.
Going into the fourth quarter, Prairie was determined to get on the board. Running back Casey Kelley scored a touchdown early in the quarter.
With about four minutes left of the game, Prairie created some momentum. Phillips connected with wide receiver Apollo Payne for a touchdown.
This put pressure on Ankeny.
Ankeny quarterback Luke Anderson threw an interception late in the fourth, giving Prairie some hope.
But Prairie was not able to get it done. Ankeny had its back against the wall but Prairie's quarterback sneak attempt fourth-and-1 at the goal line was unsuccessful.
Anderson completed 14 of 25 passes and gather 109 yards

3A No. 1 Williamsburg 56, Fairfield 14
The top-ranked Raiders (6-0) remained perfect on a night when starting quarterback Kellen Cockrell went down with an injury in the first half.
University of Iowa commit Derek Weisskopf had to take over under center after catching the opening touchdown from Cockrell. He proceeded to throw three TDs himself.
The senior also notched a 77-yard pick-6 in the first quarter, followed by yet another pick-6 from Braylon Wetjen on the Trojans’ next possession.
The Raiders led 28-0 after the first frame and racked up 14 more each in the second and third.

The play of the day came one period later when leading receiver Mason Morgan hit McDole on a trick play that went for a 50-yard touchdown on fourth-and-5. The Demons led 28-0 at halftime and 35-7 after three.
