John “Jack” D. Tiernan was born Feb. 15, 1931, on a farm 3 miles west of Parnell. The son of Clarence and Mildred (Mason) Tiernan. He graduated from Parnell High School in 1949. Jack enlisted in the United States Army in July of 1949, serving 20 years. Jack was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Morton on Nov. 1, 1952, in Fayetteville, N.C. After his discharge in 1969, he went to work in the Physical Plant at the University of Iowa, retiring in 1989. After his retirement he worked part time for Ron and Arlene Holden. Jack was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, loyal member of the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797, Williamsburg School Board and a Boy Scout Leader.
Jack passed away with his family by his side on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 92 years.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Barbara; five children, John (Patti) Tiernan of Williamsburg, Robert (Regina) Tiernan of Marion, Michael (Susan) Tiernan of Marion, Susie (Dan) O’Rourke of Williamsburg and Meredith (Chris) Carter of Iowa City; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Ann Donohoe of Parnell. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard Tiernan, and brother-in-law, Donnie Donohoe.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, 2023s at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Visitation will follow the Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Hall in Williamsburg. Burial with military rites will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery in Parnell. Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg is caring for Jack and his family.
