Laurence “Larry” J. Lanning, 67, of Bessemer, Mich., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023, at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital, after a short battle with cancer.
Larry was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Nov. 25, 1955, to Joseph and Margaret (Peterson) Lanning. He lived in Marion, Iowa, his entire life until his retirement in September 2020, when he moved to Bessemer, where he loved the North Country and Lake Superior. He was married to Marie Ramsey on Aug. 12, 1976, in Bessemer.
Larry loved music and guitar, and played in numerous bands for more than 50 years in and around the Cedar Rapids area.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; a sister, Cile (Mark) Nabors of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Scott Lanning (Sue Lewis) of Hubbard, Ore.; a sister, Joyce “Tina” Dietzgen of Marion; a brother, Greg (Elvie) Kennedy of Cedar Rapids; in-laws, Bob (Vicki) Ramsey of Center Point, Kathy (Tim) Steel of Mesa, Ariz., Sheri (Kevin) Springman of Cedar Rapids and Kevin Ramsey of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Margaret Lanning; in-laws, John and Marlene Ramsey; and nieces, Kathleen Springman and Stephanie Thur.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Cedar Rapids.
