For the first time since the opening week of the regular season, all seven of The Gazette’s No. 1-ranked Iowa high school football teams won Friday night.
But there were still upsets throughout the rankings.
In Class 1A, No. 2 MFL MarMac suffered its first loss, 13-9 to Sumner-Fredericksburg.
Two top-five teams fell in Class 3A. No. 3 Creston and No. 2 Harlan delivered an expected classic, with Creston earning a 25-22 win. No. 5 Hampton-Dumont-CAL was knocked off by Humboldt, 14-7.
Class 1A’s top-five matchup wasn’t as close. No. 3 West Lyon stifled No. 4 Western Christian in a battle of unbeatens, 20-3.
The final upset came after midnight. East Buchanan beat Class A No. 5 North Linn, 41-14, in one of many games that was delayed by severe weather.
