The Iowa City charter requires a primary if three or more candidates file for a district seat, or if five or more candidates file for the two at-large seats. Only District A has enough candidates to require a primary this year, which will be held Tuesday, Oct. 10. Only voters in District A — southwest Iowa City — will vote in the primary. The top two District A candidates will advance to the Nov. 7 general election. All voters in the city may vote on the two at-large seats and for both the district seats in the Nov. 7 election.
