Verna Atkins, 92, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, 2023, at UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital. Graveside service to be held 3 p.m. on Monday at Linwood Cemetery.
Survivors include sister Mabel Moody; two daughters, Linda (Tom) Koch and Chris (Rich) Hutchins; a son, Sam (Carisa) Atkins; a granddaughter she helped raise, Carly Remington; 13 other grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Atkins; sister, Vivian Becker; brother, Eugene Swain; and four daughters, Kathy Davies, Patti Epperson, Debbie Kleinendorst and Terry Myers.
Verna was raised in Williamsburg and moved to Cedar Rapids at the age of 17, where she met and married her husband and raised her family. Verna retired from Collins Radio in 1988. She will be remembered for her strength in facing life’s challenges, sense of humor, strong opinions, and deep love of family. The simplest pleasures brought Verna great joy. She enjoyed many activities including puzzles, crosswords, gardening, Yahtzee, game shows, collecting, trips to the casino and to visit her sister in Tulsa, and most of all, spending time with loved ones.
Following the 3 p.m. service, Verna will be honored with a Celebration of Life at CJ’s Bar & Grill from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the family.
