3A No. 2 Williamsburg 21, 4A No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier 20
When the Williamsburg Raiders listed their preseason goals, the consensus No. 1 pick was simple — a Class 3A state championship.
Ian Stumpff was an outlier.
“I put down, first, ‘Beat Xavier,’” he said.
“Because I knew if we could beat them, we’d be good enough to win a state championship later on.”
Makes sense. And the Raiders pulled it off.
Ranked No. 2 in 3A, Williamsburg denied 4A top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier on a 2-point conversion with 1:30 left and snapped the Saints’ 14-game win streak, 21-20, in a non-district football game Friday night at Saints Field.
“They’re the defending 4A champs, and this is going to help us a lot with out confidence and energy,” Williamsburg’s Rayce Heitman said.
The Raiders (2-0) scored 21 consecutive points and took a 21-7 lead into the final 8 minutes.

5A No. 6 Linn-Mar 49, Cedar Rapids Washington 7
There’s just got to be this feeling of absolute power in football when you know you’re going to run the football offensively, the opponent knows you’re going to run the football offensively but still can’t stop you.
So it was Friday night at Kingston Stadium for the Linn-Mar Lions.
Injuries to its starting quarterback and highly regarded tight end in the second quarter made Linn-Mar way one dimensional. But that one dimension still was mighty good in a 49-7 win over Cedar Rapids Washington.
Tailback Dylan Muszynski rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns and fullback Tyree Alons added 161 yards and two TDs as Class 5A’s sixth-ranked team grinded its opponent into oblivion.
“The credit goes to my O-line, of course,” Muszynski said. “The holes they gave me were pretty huge. Our quarterback is my best friend, so I knew I had to do it for him. Seeing him go down gave me motivation to go out there and finish what he started.”

Iowa City Liberty 41, Iowa City High 14
Graham Beckman lost his top five receivers from last season.
It’s all good.
In an pivotal early-season Class 5A clash, Iowa City Liberty (1-1), led by Beckman, knocked off Iowa City High (0-2), 41-14, winning the Battle for Zeus for the fourth time in the six-year series.
Beckman had one rushing touchdown and completed 26 of 32 passes for 269 yards and three scores — all three going to Dallas Miller.
“Last year, it was an excellent group of guys,” Beckman said. “But this year, they all have their special talents. Obviously, Dallas was my main threat tonight, but I trust all the guys.”

5A No. 6 Cedar Rapids Prairie 49, Dubuque Senior 13
The offense for Cedar Rapids Prairie has quick-strike ability.
Tailback Casey Kelley has proven to be the igniter so far this season.
The elusive senior scored six touchdowns, rushing for 226 yards on 14 carries as the Hawks, ranked No. 7 in Class 5A, rolled to a 49-13 win over Dubuque Senior on Friday night at John Wall Field.
Kelley couldn't remember having a game with numbers like he put up on Friday night.
“I may have done something like that when I was a little guy,” he said with a smile, “but never anything like that on a big stage like this. Watching film, (of Dubuque Senior) we felt like we could figure some things out and come up with some big plays.”
First-year Prairie Coach Kyle Knock knows what Kelley brings to the team's offense.
“You know, he just wants the ball,” Knock said. “The kid brings excitement every play in practice and every single play in the game. He is a fun kid to coach and he just kept saying to give him the ball.”
Kelley’s big plays came early and often. On Prairie’s first four scoring drives in the first half, none lasted longer than two plays. Kelley scored on runs of 27 and 9 yards, then, after Senior scored on a 3-yard Noah Roling run, Kelley netted his third TD on a 76-yard scamper on the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff. The fourth score came on a 22-yard pass from Will Phillips to Denzil Green.

1A No. 7 Iowa City Regina 51, Mid-Prairie 19
The swagger is back.
Following a pair of early playoff exits, Class 1A seventh-ranked Iowa City Regina (2-0) is off to a flying start. A week after a convincing 44-6 win over West Liberty, the Regals followed it up with another dominant performance, dispatching Mid-Prairie, 51-19, Friday night.
A Regina team that has taken its lumps with young teams is now back with a senior-laden group. Through two weeks, there are positives to be found all over the field.
“We’ll find out as the season goes on,” Regina Coach Jason Dumont said. “I’ve always said there’s a big difference between a 15- or 16-year-old junior and 17- or 18-year-old senior, and I think you’re starting to see a little bit of that with us.”
On this night, swagger arrived in the form of Jackson Naeve. The senior wideout had a night to remember, scoring five touchdowns. Naeve rushed for a pair of scores, and caught all three of Gentry Dumont’s touchdown passes.
“Truly special,” Naeve said. “I did not expect that five. We were just having fun out here.”
