Cedar Rapids teen, mother charged in Marion shooting
17-year-old victim was playing basketball in Hanna Park

MARION — A Cedar Rapids teenager is facing an attempted murder charge after a shooting in Marion last month.
Antonio Juarez-Luna, 15, is accused of shooting a 17-year-old he was playing basketball with at Hanna Park on Aug. 5.
Juarez-Luna, who was arrested Aug. 26, is charged with attempted murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent, use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and being a minor armed with dangerous weapon.
His mother, Miriah Juarez-Hernadez, 45, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested Friday on charges of prohibited transfer/loan/rent of a firearm to unauthorized person, accessory after the fact, obstructing prosecution or defense and transfer of pistol or revolver to person under 21.
Juarez-Hernandez admitted to police she drove her son and his friends back to Cedar Rapids after the shooting and that she gave the gun used in the shooting to another juvenile to hide, according to a Marion Police Department news release.
Police later found the gun at the juvenile’s home, according to a the news release.
Police said the shooting victim, who has not been identified, was at Hanna Park with two friends, playing basketball with four other individuals, including Juarez-Luna. A fight broke out between the groups, and Juarez-Luna got a gun from his backpack and fired about 10 shots at the 17-year-old before running away, police said.
The victim was shot in both legs and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
