Edna Esther Stangland moved to heaven Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, from Bickford of Marion Assisted Living, at the age of 94 years.
Edna was born May 26, 1929, in York Township, Iowa County, the daughter of Otto Adolph Dietrich Doehrmann and Anna Louise (Glandorf) Doehrmann. She attended Immanuel Parochial School. Edna was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church June 16, 1929, and was then confirmed on June 13, 1943. She was united in marriage to Edward Warren Stangland on Nov. 25, 1948, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Williamsburg. Edna worked for Holden’s Foundation Seeds for 32 years retiring in 2002, and then part-time at Monsanto until 2007. Edna was active in St. Paul Lutheran Church serving as president of the Women’s Guild for many years, director of Altar Guild and was a greeter. She was also a Mary Kay consultant.
Edna loves her family and friends and adores her Bickford family. The staff took exceptional care of her, loving her like their own. Edna would tell you the most important thing in your life is to “love God and love others.” You do this through putting on the character of Christ by 1.) John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.“ 2.) Go to church regularly and 3.) Study the Bible.
Edna is survived by her daughter, Carol (David) Green of Central City; son-in-law, Robert Strouse of Malon, Texas; five grandchildren, Sumer Myers, Ansara (Tim) Kula, Veriah (Vern) Kula, Erika (Doug) Decker and Tyler (Erin) Strouse; six great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Raymond Doehrmann of Williamsburg, Mildred Shutterle of Norway and Olga Hauder of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Kenneth Stangland; daughter, Sandra Strouse; and siblings, Herbert Doehrmann and Elesa Slager.
A Celebration of Life in Christ service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at St. Paul Lutheran church in Williamsburg. Pastor Stuart Rethwisch will be officiating. Burial will be at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg.
