Lavern Schwien, 85, of Clarence, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2023, at Mercy Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Clarence, with Janet Shotwell officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.
Lavern was born March 5, 1938, to Hermann and Edna (Schroeder) Schwien in Clarence, Iowa. He married Karen Kintzel on April 1, 1961, at St. John’s united Church of Christ in Clarence.
Lavern is survived by his wife, Karen; daughter, Lisa of Clarence; and sister, Marylin Riedesel of Eldridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Lavern served his country honorably in the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong farmer and worked for Wapsie Valley Creamery until his retirement. Lavern also enjoyed fishing, his draft horses, and trips to Alaska to visit Lisa.
