William "Bill" Burke, 81, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Aug. 6, 2023, under hospice care at Hiawatha Care Center. Visitation will be held at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories Stateroom from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10. Funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, with committal service to follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Bill was born March 15, 1942, at Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids, to Madeline Robinson Burke. He attended St. Matthew and Immaculate Conception elementary schools and graduated from Regis High School.
Bill initially worked for Collins Radio in the paint shop. He became a journeyman electrician and just received his 55-year pin. He served in the National Guard for seven years. He belonged to the IBEW 405 Electrical Union, Immaculate Conception Church, and the Knights of Columbus 909. He was a member of Old Farts Electric, helping people with flooded homes in 2008.
Bill was married to Anita Coufal Burke for 57 years. They built a home in the country and enjoyed working together on their acreage. He loved his family, NASCAR, and couponing.
Bill is survived by his wife, Anita; a daughter, Kim (Joe) Denny of Cedar Rapids; a granddaughter, Maci Denny; a sister-in-law, Elaine (Don) Griffith and family of Brownsburg, Ind.; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mom.
Bill wanted to thank his daughter, Kim, who took excellent care of him during his illnesses, to Jim and Jane Hess, Donna Jo and Bill Elsner, and Brian and Mindy Kranig for all their help. Thank you to Hospice and the wonderful care given to him at the Hiawatha Care Center. We are grateful for all the love he received while a resident.
