PHONY MONEY: More than 20 counterfeit bills were spotted in Cedar Rapids last week, and police believe there are likely many more being circulated in the area. As of week's end, at least three men had been arrested on charges of felony forgery.

CASE DRAGS ON: The tragic disappearance of two young Evansdale girls remains unsolved as the third week of the investigation unfolds. For more than a week now, authorities have been calling the case an abduction and say they have reason to believe the girls are still alive. Unfortunately, progress seems painstakingly slow.

OOPS: The state's new public information board, aimed at overseeing and enforcing Iowa's public meetings and open records law, held its first meeting on July 19. The only public notice of the meeting was the agenda posted on a bulletin board outside the governor's office, as the law requires. Reporters who regularly cover state government - but spend less time at the Statehouse when the Legislature isn't in session - were not notified of the meeting by email as they are for other meetings. The governor's office promised to update the email list.
